Rooftop revolution
A short description of the NBS project
The Rooftop Revolution is a foundation that advices and supports companies, governments, housing corporations, citizens and other organisations in implementing green roofs on their property or in the neighbourhood. The foundation also acts as mediator and process counsellor. Their focus is on Dutch cities, especially Amsterdam. The foundation works at the request of the municipality of Amsterdam. The goal is to turn as many grey roofs into green roofs as possible, but the initial aim is to green 10% of Dutch roofs before 2020. Green roofs contributes to 1, a decrease of the risk of flooding, reduction of heat stress, cooling down of buildings, air quality and noise reduction. The foundation argues that an inclusive process is important as well as a fair distribution of the costs. This means they develop the plans for the roofs together with stakeholders, for example citizens, and divide the costs among the actors that benefit from the green roof.
