A short description of the NBS project

Programma rivier als getijdepark (river as tide park) is a project initiated by the municipality of Rotterdam with the aim of greening river banks to make Rotterdam more climate resilient. The municipality of Rotterdam has initiated a programme that is called Rivier als Getijdepark (River as tide park). The purpose of the project is to green the riverbanks of two rivers (Nieuwe Maas and Nieuwe Waterweg) by the creation of parks in and alongside the rivers. These are called tide parks, since they are influenced by high tide and low tide. The goal of the project is to make Rotterdam more resilient to the consequences of climate change, namely an increased risk of flooding in times of heavy rainfall. Besides that, the tide parks create more room for 1, in and alongside the river. Lastly, the parks can be used for recreational purposes. It is one of a few tide parks in the Netherlands. A variety of partners is working together to implement the plans, namely environmental organisations, companies, the national government (Ministry of Infrastructure and Water), associations, water authorities, municipalities and the Province of South Holland. The project is financed by the national, regional and local government and Europe (LIFE).
